Context
What if there was a fashion app that understood your style perfectly? Ever since Clueless (1995), fashionistas have dreamed of getting styling ideas with their own clothes for all of their events, trips, and moods. Now, in the age of LLMs, state-of-the-art fashion (data) models, virtual try-on technology, computer vision and photo processing, this dream has become reality.
Alta (iOS and web) reimagines truly personalized, agentic fashion with an easy-to-use, fun app that allows people to upload their own closet to get outfit recommendations. Though the prospect of digitizing one's entire closet is daunting, the ability to get outfit recommendations, create digital avatars of the looks, manage shopping wishlists, plan for multi-day trips, and more proved more than valuable for the 500k+ global users on the app.
Impact
As an angel investor and hands-on designer, I worked with the CEO and founding engineer on rapid end-to-end design cycles to design the MVP of the styling experience.
As a consumer app, the team was most considered with user retention and delivering the best possible product experience over other metrics. Over two years, we performed multiple iterations to develop and optimize Alta's stickiest features:
- Style a user's closet to create flattering looks
- Render a virtual try-on (VTON) digital avatar
- Manage a user's closet items and provide useful stats
- Store a user's saved looks and tie it to events in their lifestyle
- Plan for a multi-day trip with many looks and outfits
- Get fashion inspiration from catalogs and other users
- Give feedback on style preferences to learn and improve over time
